Summary

It is 1939。 Despite a law banning him from performing surgery， Ravic – a German doctor and refugee living in Paris – has been treating some of the city’s most elite citizens for two years on the behalf of two less-than-skillful French physicians。

Nie przeczytałam w życiu wiele książek， ale wiem， że takiej na pewno już nigdy nie przeczytam。 Czuć niepokój i klimat Paryża w przededniu wojny oraz uczucia i rozterki bohaterów。 Wszystko wyważone idealnie， ani jednego zbędnego słowa。 Dużo emocji。 Wiem， że nie zapomnę o tej historii i na pewno do niej wrócę。

It's hard to imagine how empty one would feel not being able to return to their country not because you can't get in but because it no longer exists， while also being simultaneously rejected from everywhere else。Here we see Ravic （a brilliant surgeon performing operations for lesser French surgeons） living in a liminal Paris。 While we know that Paris is ultimately heading to war and occupation most of the characters do not。 Ravic is the only one who recognises the inevitability of the Nazi invas It's hard to imagine how empty one would feel not being able to return to their country not because you can't get in but because it no longer exists， while also being simultaneously rejected from everywhere else。Here we see Ravic （a brilliant surgeon performing operations for lesser French surgeons） living in a liminal Paris。 While we know that Paris is ultimately heading to war and occupation most of the characters do not。 Ravic is the only one who recognises the inevitability of the Nazi invasion， this is based partly on his experience at the hands of the Gestapo back in his fatherland， partly his time in the Great War， and partly on his understanding of the French national character。 Ravic's malaise is so heavy that it affects the reader， this book is undeniably melancholic。His romance with Joan is frustrating but we know why he can't fully commit。 Both the memories of his torture and his precarious refugee status make him a ghost that can never have a tangible future。 He finds some degree of peace towards the end of the novel but if anything that comes from an acceptance of his unavoidable fate。Among Remarque's other work this book is most similar to Flotsam。 However， Flotsam is much funnier and its auxiliary characters far more memorable and likeable。 At the heart of Flotsam is hope， whereas Arch of Triumph has a heart of despair。 。。。more

"Arch of Triumph" is a book I am not quite sure how to describe。 I could call it a romance/adventure novel， but I don't think that would do it justice。 While I was listening to it I was reminded mostly of the film "Casablanca" with so many of Remarque's characters working as parallels to characters in the film。 The plot of this novel is pretty predictable。 What draws you in is the cast of characters and the location。 Remarque shows a dynamic picture of Paris in 1938 from the nightclubs， the brot "Arch of Triumph" is a book I am not quite sure how to describe。 I could call it a romance/adventure novel， but I don't think that would do it justice。 While I was listening to it I was reminded mostly of the film "Casablanca" with so many of Remarque's characters working as parallels to characters in the film。 The plot of this novel is pretty predictable。 What draws you in is the cast of characters and the location。 Remarque shows a dynamic picture of Paris in 1938 from the nightclubs， the brothels， and the slums。 He shows us a colorful community of refugees buffeted by the upheavals of the early 20th century and surviving on the margins of society。 Ravic's romance with Joan forms one of the core conflicts of the book。 From the moment they meet the reader knows theirs is a doomed， fragile romance that can only exist in the peace between wars。 They bond over shared pain and shared experience。 Their moments alone in conversation are deeply moving and intimate。 I will be the first to admit that romance is not my preferred genre， but I was engaged with Ravic and Joan's relationship and wanted it to succeed。 I fell in love with the little community of Paris refugees and the patients Ravic treated at his practice。 This book was unexpectedly moving and fulfilling。 I highly recommend it。 。。。more
